PBA Spare Shots: Scroggins Turns Player of the Year Chase into Three-Man Sprint

With his second victory of the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, has turned the Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year race into a three-man sprint heading into the final three events of the season.

By picking up 16 points with his win in the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, Scroggins now has 48 points, eight behind leader Bill O’Neill of Southampton, Pa., and four behind Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla.

In each of the final three events, the top four players will earn 16, 8, 4 and 2 points, respectively. An additional point will be awarded to fifth-place finishers in the stepladder finals of the GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship March 28 in West Babylon, N.Y., and the Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open April 4 in Baltimore. The Go RVing Match Play Championship, which features a single-elimination match play format, will award points to the top four finishers only.

In every other major statistical race other than Player of the Year points, Williams – at age 50 – is the frontrunner. The 47-time PBA Tour champion leads O’Neill by $95 in earnings with $135,770, holds a 1.7-pin lead over Wes Malott in the George Young Memorial High Average race with a 221.91 for 465 games, and tops the Harry Smith Point Leader chase with 193,121 points, more than 12,000 ahead of O’Neill.

The March 15 issue of Sports Illustrated, now on sale at newsstands across America, includes “The Remarkable Story of Tom Smallwood,” a four-page feature by Michael Farber. On Wednesday – the same day “SI” arrived in most American mailboxes, CBS Evening News with Katie Couric also aired a closing segment on Smallwood’s all-American success story, rising from unemployed auto worker to PBA World Champion.

CHRIS BARNES CHALLENGE III TURNS INTO BENEFIT FOR JOHNSON CHARITY EFFORT

Chris Barnes Challenge III, presented by Columbia 300, was a victory for Barnes Saturday at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus, Ohio, and a victory for the Don Johnson family’s fund-raising efforts.

Barnes originally was going to bowl 16-year-old West Virginia high school sophomore Sean Johnson in a three-game match, but Jimmy Johnson – the son of the late PBA Hall of Famer who is the namesake of the Etonic Don Johnson Memorial – got involved in the match as well, and the three-way contest turned into an $800 contribution to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on behalf of the Don Johnson Family Foundation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital of Columbus.

Barnes bowled games of 280, 233 and 233 for a 746 series, easily topping Sean Johnson’s 566 and a 580 by Jimmy Johnson, but he immediately handed over his “winnings” to the Johnson family. While the money stays in Columbus, the effort to help JDRF isn’t new to Barnes. One of his twin sons has juvenile diabetes and he and his wife Lynda are active members of the JDRF community in Texas.

“It’s unbelievable the amount of work the Johnson family has put into this event,” Barnes said. “The fact that they have raised well over $100,000 the past three years to benefit JDRF and Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus is amazing.”

FAMOUS PAIR OF MADRAS SLACKS ON AUCTION BLOCK FOR CHARITY

That designer pair of Madras slacks made famous in the television duel between PBA Tour roommates Chris Barnes and Mika Koivuniemi went on the online auction block during the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator in Columbus, Ohio, to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The online auction will be conducted on BestSportsBid.com which will run the auction on behalf of the PBA. The opening bid will be $50 and the auction will run through Tuesday, March 16, at 6 p.m. Eastern.

For the record, the trousers in question are from the Jos. A. Bank Executive Collection, they are “dry clean only” and size-wise, they are “36R”…in case the purchaser plans to actually wear them.

INJURY LIST TAKES ITS TOLL IN ETONIC DON JOHNSON ELIMINATOR

John Nolen of Waterford, Mich., remained on the sidelines after an emergency appendectomy following the USBC Masters, and he had company during the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator when Australia’s Jason Belmonte and veterans Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., and Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla., bowed out due to health issues.

Belmonte returned home to Australia to nurse a hamstring injury sustained in the final round of match play in the U.S. Open. Weber hurt his back during practice prior to the start of the Eliminator, and Allen withdrew due to a knee injury after four games. Robert Smith, who currently calls Columbus, Ohio, home, also withdrew during the second round due to a sudden illness.

LIZ JOHNSON MAKES PBA TOUR EXEMPT FIELD FOR NINTH TIME

Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., finished eighth in the Etonic Don Johnson Eliminator Tour Qualifying Round to advance to the Field of 64 for the ninth time in her career, by far the most successful TQR record for women. Since the PBA opened competition opportunities to women in 2004, Johnson has bowled against PBA Exempt Tour fields 44 times, including “open field” events where TQR qualifying isn’t required.

Check the pba.com home page and fill out your PBA Bracket for the GO RVing Match Play Championship. It's FREE and there are some fun prizes to win. Make sure to follow the live scoring and live Xtra Frame coverage next week in Norwich, Connecticut.

Many people filling out NCAA Brackets just plug in the number one seeds all the way into the Final Four. The same temptation happened to me as I filled out my bowling bracket for the action getting underway next week at the Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center.

It all starts with the Round of 64 on Thursday March 18^th at 11 a.m. Eastern and 32 first round best-of-7 games matchups.

Let's start the discussion with the first quadrant of the bracket where Walter Ray Williams Jr. holds the number 1 seed. The TQR qualifiers will be added after the TQR round on Wednesday.

The pattern for this event will be mixed with Shark on the left lane and Cheetah on the right lane throughout the week.

Best 4 out of 7 games in match play, tough not to punch Walter Ray all the way to the finals, one of the hotter players on Tour and always tough to beat 4 out of 7 times. He gets the #8 TQR entry in the Round of 64.

Brian Voss vs. Parker Bohn III, wow, couple of Hall of Famers, now that's a toss up.

Jason Couch vs. Wayne Garber is a very interesting matchup, another lefty-righty combo. Couch is the vet, but with Wayne Garber and his incredible TV rolloff victory with Walter Ray in the Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open, he fears no one. Potential Walter Ray vs. Garber rematch in the Round of 16.

Ryan Shafer vs. Jason Sterner -- Sterner's best finish this season is a 15th place finish at the Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open while Shafer has 3 Top 10's in the second half, advantage Shafer.

Bottom half of the Walter Ray Bracket has Rhino Page going up against PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker. Page won at the World Series of Bowling Viper Championship and has 2 major shows in the second half at the Tournament of Champions and the USBC Masters, I'm going with Page here.

Stevie Weber vs. Tim Mack is a very interesting matchup, I give the edge to Mack based on his recent apparent health and energy level.

Ronnie Russell vs. Robert Smith, based on the Shark/Cheetah combo I like Russell's game here.

Finally, Tom Smallwood has been coming on in the second half picking up momentum in the last 4 events. Look for him to beat the #1 TQR entry. Always tough to adjust after the TQR.

Two wins for The Real Deal Bill O’Neill this year, including his first major win at the U.S. Open -- overheard: "the last thing O'Neill needs is a little confidence", well he has confidence, look for him to advance over the #7 TQR entry and get his footing early.

Version 2.0 Lonnie Waliczek gets Mike Wolfe in the Round of 64, that's a head scratcher, let me noodle on that one for a minute.

Mika Koivuniemi is looking more Mika-like these days and now that he has shed the madras-pants bet, look for him in a Round of 64 win over Derek Sapp.

Battle of the titans in the Norm Duke vs. Doug Kent matchup. I hope this one gets covered on Xtra Frame. Three USBC Masters wins between them, Norm seems to be back in form after his ankle injury, my pick is Duke.

Pete Weber vs. Eddie VanDaniker Jr., gotta go with PDW.

Michael Machuga vs. P.J. Haggerty, couple of intangibles for Haggerty: maybe some more experience on mixed patterns and an appearance in U.S. Open match play as an alternate gives Haggerty some high level practice. Intense match.

Brad Angelo vs. Stuart Williams presents another tough choice. For whatever reason, Williams could be on the verge of a run here late in the season. I like his ball roll here left and right.

Tommy Jones will get the #2 TQR entry, look for Jones to go deep in this bracket setting up a potential Jones-O'Neill showdown to make the show.

Just like the Number 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament coming up, tough to see any of the Top 4 getting knocked out at the GO RVing Match Play Championship in the Round of 64. If Player of the Year and King of Bowling is on his game, look for him in the Round of 8 to make the show. Wes gets the #6 TQR entry early.

Moving up the bracket Steve Harman faces Joe Ciccone. Both players have shown signs of life lately, Harman had a nice run in Columbus, may have a little more MO, I'll go with Harman.

Eugene McCune vs. Todd M. Book on the Shark-Cheetah left-right combo, things that make you go hmmm. I going to go out on a limb and say that McCune overpowers the lanes for an extra double late to win.

Mike DeVaney vs. George Lambert IV presents another head-scratcher. Edge to DeVaney's experience here.

Mike Fagan moves closer to home territory vs. Cassidy Schaub. Hometown edge to Fagan, his first singles win and a Top 11 finish in Columbus to work with.

It doesn't get any easier as you look at the Steve Jaros vs. Dino Castillo matchup. Jaros tends to keep it simple, which may be the difference here.

Brian Kretzer came oh so close to his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour win in Columbus, he will have to fight expectations here as well as a tough customer in Mitch Beasley. Beasley's equipment expertise may trump the feel game of Kretzer in this matchup.

Jason Belmonte made a deep run at the U.S. Open only to lose his legs in the final games. With some time off to rest look for Belmo to make a deep run here with a potential Belmonte-Malott barnburner to make the show.

Chris Barnes is a tough competitor and very tough to beat 4 times in this format. Super versatile on the mixed Shark-Cheetah, he gets the #5 TQR entry to start. Look for him to go deep as always, especially with some rest.

Moving up this bracket, Jeff Carter takes on Ritchie Allen. Carter has had a rough second half, my pick here is Ritchie.

John May takes on Chris Loschetter, C-Lo had a decent run in Fountain Valley and in Reno at the USBC Masters look for him to win in the Round of 64.

Jack Jurek takes on John Nolen in the Round of 64. Nolen is bowling for the first time since he had an emergency appendectomy, tough to imagine Rolen will be Smooth Rollin' this soon after recovery, I give the nod to Jurek.

Can Brian Waliczek upset Sean Rash in the first round? My guess is Rash makes it ahead to the Round of 32.

Patrick Allen pulled out of the Don Johnson Eliminator due to injury, a week rest will do him some good physically and mentally. Look for him to be sharp on the East Coast swing and win here against Troy Wollenbecker.

Mike Edwards made deep runs in the last 2 majors at the USBC Masters and the U.S. Open, look for him to beat Nathan Bohr in the Round of 64.

The Top 4 seeds are the Mount Rushmore of Pro Bowling at the moment, but how can you not argue that Mike Scroggins is the hottest player in the game? Two TV shows at the USBC Masters and the U.S. Open, nearly going back-to-back Open wins in Indy. Scroggy gets the #4 TQR entry, who can stop him?

Murphy Accepts BPAA Youth Director Post

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) announces the appointment of bowling industry veteran Chad Murphy as its new Director of Youth. As BPAA continues to redefine its strategic priorities, Murphy will assume responsibilities of managing existing programs and developing new proprietor-driven initiatives aimed at growing the sport among young bowlers.

“Chad is a bowling industry insider who knows the game, the product and the people,” said Steven Johnson, executive director of BPAA. “His expertise will bring tremendous value not only to refining what we currently offer, but in developing new programs that will create excitement and enthusiasm from proprietor, youth bowlers and their parents.” Johnson added, “We know Chad will be an instant asset to BPAA as well as a great resource to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and their youth department.”

Murphy comes to BPAA from Ebonite International in Hopkinsville, Ky., where he served as the Columbia 300 brand manager since 2007. Before that, he worked at Columbia Industries in San Antonio for eight years and served as technical tour consultant for Columbia 300 on the PBA Tour from 1998 to 2001.

“I’m excited about this new opportunity to work with the BPAA team to help our great sport grow in as many ways possible,” said Murphy. “As a lifelong bowler, I believe this game to be fun and competitive which is exactly what I have experienced all of my life. With two future youth bowlers of my own, I appreciate a great deal that part of BPAA’s new strategy includes growing our sport with the youth segment and I can’t wait to get started!”

In 1998, Murphy was a member of the United States National Bowling Team that won the Silver Medal at the World Tenpin Cup in Amsterdam. In both 1994 and 1996, his team, the Ebonite Nitro/R’s, captured the World Team Challenge Grand Championship Finals. In 2005, Murphy was honored by Bowlers Journal International Magazine as one of the “Top 100” coaches.

Murphy is expected to assume his new duties in mid-April. His wife, Jennifer and sons Joshua (6) and Noah (3) will make the move at the end of the school year in May. When not on the lanes, Murphy enjoys golf, good movies, interesting books and great friendships.

Get in the Game: PBA’s Bracket Battle Set to Begin

SEATTLE, Wash. – Let the games begin: the Professional Bowlers Association’s first “PBA Bracket Battle” is online and ready to go, giving bowling fans an opportunity to pick all of the winners in the Go RVing Match Play Championship which gets underway Wednesday, March 17, at Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center in Norwich, Conn.

The PBA Bracket Battle will seed the top 58 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour players and eight players who emerge from the Tour Qualifying Round on March 17 in a 64-player single-elimination bracket competition in the tradition of the NCAA basketball championships which also get underway the same week.

It’s free and easy for PBA fans to play along. Simply visit pba.com and look for the PBA Bracket Battle icon. Bowlers can play the game by themselves or they can set up brackets for their leagues or other groups. Complete rules and prizes are also listed on pba.com. Entries must be submitted by the start time of Round of 64 matches on Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. Eastern.

In the PBA Bracket Battle, top-ranked players are seeded into different sections. In theory, the top four seeded players could advance to the semifinal round and No. 1 could meet No. 2 for the title.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., is the overall No. 1 seed based upon his ranking in the Lumber Liquidators Harry Smith Point Leader Award race. Bill O’Neill of Southampton, Pa.; Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, and Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, who are ranked No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively, in the PBA points race, are the top seeds in their respective sections of the bracket.

The top eight Exempt Tour players will be paired against players who emerge from the March 17 TQR. Those names and positions will be plugged into the bracket after the TQR is over, but it could produce some interesting matchups. For example, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who will try to make the Round of 64 out of the TQR, has already made three TV appearances this season. Likewise, Anthony LaCaze of Melrose Park, Ill., will try to advance out of the TQR. LaCaze proved he can win when he captured his first PBA Tour title in the Earl Anthony Memorial in January.

There are numerous other challenging picks: PBA Hall of Famers Brian Voss and Parker Bohn III will meet in the first round of Williams’ bracket, which also includes 2009 PBA World Champion Tom Smallwood.

O’Neill’s bracket includes Tommy Jones along with Hall of Famers Norm Duke and Pete Weber.

Malott’s section includes Australia’s Jason Belmonte, and current-season winners Mike Fagan and Mike DeVaney.

Scroggins’ bracket includes Patrick Allen, Sean Rash and defending Go RVing Match Play champion Chris Barnes, among others.

Making it even more fun, subscribers to pba.com’s Xtra Frame online live video-streaming service will be able to follow each round as it happens. To sign up, go to pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame icon. For non-subscribers, pba.com will provide non-stop live scoring.

All matches, except the semifinal and championship rounds, will be best-of-seven games. The semifinal and title matches will be decided by three games, total pinfall. In addition, the Go RVing Match Play Championship will be a dual lane conditioning pattern contest, with the left lane using the Shark pattern and the right lane using the Cheetah pattern for all matches.

Fans will receive points in increasing value for correct picks in each round. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the Go RVing Match Play Championship. The Go RVing Championship match will be televised live on ESPN at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, March 21.

March Madness is in full effect for college basketball with most conferences beginning tournament play this week to determine the teams with automatic berths into the 64-team bracket NCAA Championship Bracket. The PBA begins its own version of March Madness with the Go RVing Match Play Championship on March 17^th, 2010. Whereas I have no clue how the NCAA manages to decide on the 64 teams and their rankings in the tournament, I have a general idea how the PBA does it.

The madness for the PBA begins in this tournament with the lane conditions; which are described under tournament details as mixed. Meaning the left lane will utilize one pattern and the right lane will utilize a different pattern. This adds an increased level of difficulty as players must break down two patterns, adjust to two patterns, and carry equipment for two patterns. It’s pretty much twice as hard as bowling on one pattern.

As for the bracket, all the 56 exempt players on the PBA Tour are seeded into the 64-player bracket based on their current point rankings. Currently, Walter Ray Williams, Jr. is your #1 seed. Then eight at-large bids into the tournament are won through the weeks earlier TQR. Those players are seeded at the bottom of the bracket. Isn’t it nice to know that if you’re the last qualifier in, you get to bowl Walter Ray right from the get-go? I mean, at least in a normal tournament you have a chance to improve your standings with a 14-game qualifier.

The matches for the 64-player field are best of seven matches much like regular tour stops. Unlike regular tour stops though, the finals is a three game total pinfall match. Last year’s tournament final saw Chris Barnes defeat Walter Ray Williams Jr. by a score of 722 to 693 even though Barnes lost two of the three games.

Though a repeat of that final would certainly be thrilling since both players are still at the top of their game, we won’t get a repeat of that 2008-2009 final between Williams, Jr. and Barnes. If do they meet, it will be in the semi-finals and it will be a best of seven match this year as Barnes is the #4 seed and will be part of the same half of the bracket as Williams, Jr.

Other players that stand out as favorites in this tournament are recent U.S. Open Winner, Bill O’Neill, two-time winner this year, Mike Scroggins, and King of Bowling, Wes Malott. Of course, you all will get to choose your own favorites by participating and filling out your own bracket in the PBA Bracket Battle. The bracket will officially go online on March 10^th so don’t miss out.

THE BIG FOUR

1. Mike Scroggins at 45 is better than Mike Scroggins at 40, 35, 30, and 25. You get the point.

2. I count three bowlers with exemptions next year that are outside the top 40 in points that barring a victory will not creep into the top 40; which means there are three less exemptions to be handed out at the end of the season based on points. That makes 37^th position the cut line with three events to go.

3. A couple weeks ago I did a blog on Parker Bohn and Robert Smith and how they were well outside the exemption cut line. Currently Parker is sitting in 36^th and inside the cut line. Smith is in 46^th and 11,000 points out of 37^th.

4. For my local angle this week, I’m sure many of my friends and family are expecting me to give myself a nice little pat on the back for winning the Alaska 700 Club Tournament and the $4,000 first place check in February. I’m sure you all want me to explain how I had the match in hand only needing a mark to win and then managed to miss the headpin wide right, leaving the 1-2-4-10. Then in a moment of pure idiocy and frustration, not picking up my spare ball and beginning my approach with my strike ball. Then upon realization that I had the wrong ball in my hands, stopping mid-approach, and switching balls. And then converting the spare as if there was never any doubt. But I’m not going to do any shady self-promotional bit on my PBA blog. That would just be ridiculous.

MY TOP TEN: With special thanks to Donnie Layman for filling in for me last week! (Most recent tournament finish in parenthesis)

1. Walter Ray Williams (28th) Here’s the thing, would you bet against him in any tournament during the entire PBA season? He’s the greatest player of his time and when his career comes to an end, I find it hard to believe he won’t be the greatest player of all time.

2. Bill O'Neill (9th) Bill started up top on my list and then had a rough patch falling down all the way to 8th, but never out. Now with a U.S. Open victory to his resume and with four top-10 finishes in his last five events (three of those are top-5’s with the victory at the U.S. Open) he’s got a great chance to win Player of the Year and he’s found that consistency he lacked early in the season.

3. Mike Scroggins (1st) I would have put Mike in 2^nd if not for losing to Bill in the U.S. Open final. With that said, hard to argue that he isn’t the best lefty on tour right now.

4. Chris Barnes (22nd) This week is his best chance to win. Another top-10 just won’t cut it for Barnes. He wants to win, he needs to win, and he should win. Now all he has to do is win.

5. Wes Malott (4th) He’s there and always competitive, but has he lost a little luster and some of his fire since his Player of the Year run last year? Once you’ve tasted success, it’s hard to find the motivation to do it again and again. How will he finish out the season? Seven top-10’s in his last 11 events. Best finish of 2^nd.

6. Tommy Jones (14th) Tommy Jones is just another example of how hard it is to win on tour with the talent level of the PBA fields. Seventh in points and 5^th in average and a 3^rd place finish at the U.S. Open. Seems like a season of “almost” for Jones.

7. Jason Belmonte (DNP) One wonders what the tour would have been like had Belmonte not won his exemption last year after sneaking through the TQR round by one pin. Belmonte deserves to be out on tour. He’s proven that.

8. Mike Fagan (11th) Mike is the guy that has every bit of potential to be the #1 player in the World. With his first title now safely secured in his back pocket, he’s on the verge of a Player of the Year run next season. Watch out for Mike Fagan in 2010-2011.

9. Pete Weber (DNP) Pete didn’t play this week, but he hasn’t finished outside the top 20 in his last five events. Including a 5^th, 7^th and 8^th place finish at the last three majors.

10. Rhino Page (19th) – Hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency. Since the tour kicked back into gear in December, finishes of 30^th, 39^th, 4^th, 52^nd, 38^th, 4^th, 52^nd, and 19^th have Page a long way away from the days he was atop the rankings.
